Last night, well in the early early morning we had a huge lightning storm. It woke both Brad and I up because we would see a huge flash of bright light and then instantly thunder...there was no waiting time. And boy was it loud! I remember thinking...I really hope the haystacks next to our house don't catch on fire. Even though the haystacks next to our house didn't catch on fire, the field behind our house did. I smelt some smoke, but it wasn't super strong so I didn't think anything of it. But when I woke up this morning I got a call from Brad telling me about the fire in the field. I guess a neighbor called Chase and told him that lightning started a fire in the grain field and that it was getting close to some houses. So Chase took the water truck and used what he had left to put out the fire.
at 11:00 I was leaving to work and while I was driving I noticed that the field was on fire...At first I thought that maybe they were just burning fields, but then I saw all the huge straw bails and realized that they wouldn't be burning fields with straw bails out in the field. So I hurried and called Brad at work and they were clueless that the field was on fire. So they hurry and rushed over and got their brand new water pivot out of the way, 3 tractors, a truck, a grain truck...and I think the combine was out there too...before the flames engulfed them. Brad told me that if I called 5 minutes later they wouldn't have been able to save all the farm equipment. I just saved Brad's boss over $500,000 in equipment damage.
After Brad got done fighting the fire he came over to my work and told me about it. He said that they had 6 firetrucks come to help. They were pretty worthless because they took their sweet time, and instead of hurrying to help put out the flames they focused on the parts where the fire had already burned making sure that it was all put out. Needless to say Brad got a little frustrated with them. Anyways the wind wasn't on their side at all, and the flames got as tall as buildings. One of the neighbors has a HUGE HUGE HUGE tractor that he rushed over in. He had a huge disk on it (the one to teal the ground with) and was speeding around the fire as fast as he could flipping dirt onto the fire. Brad said that he was going at least 50 mph and was going in and out of the flames. He said that he was more help then the firefighters.
We got very blessed today that no one got hurt and there was no damage done. I am so extremely grateful to an amazing Heavenly Father who watches out for my sweet husband and makes sure he doesn't hurt himself too bad.
Wow, that sounds like a scary adventure for the two of you. So glad that you noticed the fire and called for help.
